FTC sends money to people who paid for debt relief
What the FTC says about this program
The FTC is sending another round of payments to people who lost money to a debt relief scam.
According to the FTC and the Florida Office of the Attorney General, a group of defendants known as Helping America Group got people to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars a month by falsely promising to pay, settle, or obtain dismissal of their debts and improve their credit scores. Over time, victims found their debts unpaid, their accounts in default, and their credit scores severely damaged.
The FTC first sent payments for this matter in July 2020 and the second round of payments in December 2021, which resulted in more than $20 million in refunds. Because the agency recovered additional funds from the defendants, the FTC is sending 9,522 payments totaling more than $463,000 to people who accepted their second payment.
